Attendance Update

As from September 2015 the Government is changing the persistent absence threshold from 15% to 10%. This will mean that pupils whose attendance is 90% or below will be considered a persistent absentee (PA).

Attendance and punctuality is directly linked to attainment and success in education and is closely monitored by school staff. If required, a referral to the Education Welfare Officer may be made for additional support.

If a pupil fails to achieve 90% attendance and has 10 or more sessions (half days) of unauthorised absence recorded on the attendance register in a given period, a penalty notice may be issued by the Local Authority.

Leave of absence will not be authorised in term time. Consideration will be given to requests made under exceptional circumstances and all requests should be requested in advance, on the appropriate request form available from school.

Notes on Family Holidays


Regular attendance at school is essential to ensure uninterrupted progress and to enable children to extend their potential. Everyone at our school will endeavour  to work actively with parents to ensure that children attend regularly. We expect all children on roll to attend every day, when the school is in session as long as they are fit and healthy enough to do so.

One of our basic principles is to celebrate success. Good attendance is fundamental to a successful and fulfilling school experience, and we are happy to discuss any requests for leave of absence during term time.


Applying for absence because of a family holiday:

The Government is steadfast in the view that family holidays are taken outside school terms. If you believe your needs for absence during term time may meet the ‘exceptional circumstances’ in our Absence Policy please fill in the attached form and hand into school. Please do not assume that you will automatically get permission for absence because you filled in the form.

The Head teacher has the discretion to grant leave in term time, but they are advised to only do so in exceptional circumstances. The Headteacher will consider all the factors necessary to ensure the correct decision made is fair, this may include;

  • Reason for absence,
  • Pupil attendance,
  • Effects of the absence on pupils learning.
  • *the Headteacher is unlikely to give permission simply because holiday costs are less during term time.

Please wait to hear if the Headteacher agrees to you request. Parents can be fined for taking their children on holiday during term time WITHOUT consent from the school.

Planning your holiday:

Dates of Garras School term times are published well ahead, this is to help you plan your holidays. When you book your holiday, please check that it does not clash with the school term times. This information is given out at the beginning of the school year to ALL pupils; it is available on request from the secretary’s office if required. Your legal responsibilities:

You have a legal duty to make sure your child attends school regularly and punctually. The school and the Local Authority monitor your child’s attendance and will take action if it is poor (for more information please request Garras School’s Absence Policy).

For your information:

If you take your child out of school without permission you will be committing an offence under the Education Act 1996. We may have to refer the matter to the Education Welfare Service who may decide to prosecute. A conviction may result in a fine of up to £2,500, a prison sentence up to three months or both. Alternatively, a penalty notice may be issued under Sections 444A and 444B of the Education Act 1996, this carries the fine of £60 if paid within 21 days or £120 if paid after this but within 28 days. Failure to pay the penalty will result in court action.
