Healthy Active Lifestyles 2015
Both Sithney and Garras schools provide a comprehensive range of sporting and healthy lifestyle activities to support children to grow in confidence and lead healthier lives. These are just some of the ways in which we do it.
Climbing and Core skill development
Core skill development is fundamental in promoting healthy and active lifes tyles which is an integral part of our combined approach to PE and sport provision through the REAL PE curriculum. The new playground equipment at Sithney School has been hugely successful and specially designed to reinforce the development of balance, agility and coordination. We are currently looking at the options for similar static playground equipment at Garras School. Both schools continue to use Crenver Grove for the forest school provision but Sithney School is nearing completion of its own forest school site to extend the availability of this valuable provision.
Beach and water safety
As well as supporting all children with the opportunity to learn to swim at Helston Leisure centre both schools operate a programme of additional activities promoting beach and water safety.
Surf lifesaving skills
Both Sithney and Garras offer children who swim over 25 metres the chance to extend their confidence in the water through surf-lifesaving sessions in the Summer term. We link in with Hayle Surf Lifesaving club to provide this valuable experience.
In its 3rd year of running, sailing club is well attended by Sithney and Garras parents and pupils alike. Sailing club runs from throughout the summer term and for 4 weeks in the autumn term. This is what some of the children say about their experience:
“Sailing club helps you to trust each other more and learn the parts of the boats” Jack Dow
“I think sailing helps you understand each other and band together by helping each other” Leighton King
“I liked it when we were learning to sail because they made it fun” Alisia
“The sea air makes you healthy” Jamie Lorenzo
Thank you to all the staff and volunteers from the Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust who make this possible.
Sithney and Garras schools have teamed up with Little Kitchen Magicians to provide family cookery classes. These have been a great success with children and parents enjoying many tasty and nutritious treats. In addition it shows how we are using sports premium funding to provide healthier lifestyles for all.
Parent and child Zumba lessons and the carnival of dance have resulted in many children and adults trying dance for the first time! So much so that Sithney gained silver medal in the Cornwall School Games year 3/4 dance event.
